IMPHAL, November 12: The student’s union DM College of Science, staged a sit in protest at the Central Hall, DM College of Science, demanding exemplary punishment for the murderer of Thiyam Bindyarani of Wangbam Heirithong Leikai in Thoubal district.
Thiyam Bindyarani a class XII student of Chaoyaima Higher Secondary school was murdered after possible physical abuse on November 9.
Speaking to the media, Ringmi Awungshi, Boys’ common room secretary, DM College said that the government should take up a stringent action against the murderer so that such incidents do not happen again in future.
If the government does not take the matter seriously and remains silent over the issue, such despicable crimes will only increase in the state, he added.
He also said that the increasing number of rape cases in the state has given a fear psychosis especially to the girl students.
In this regard, the government should take up proactive action against all rapists and murderers in the state and it is the responsibility of the government to give a sense of security to all the girls and children in the state Ringmi Awungshi said.
Elsewhere, the Thoubal District United Women’s Development Organisation has condemned the recent rape and killing of 18 years old girl, by her own relative, Thiyam Sureshkumar, at Wangbal Lamboi Thong last Sunday night.
A statement of the organisation has demanded that the culprit should be tried at a fast track court and befitting punishment given to him. It further demanded that the government to institute 24×7 women police stations with good infrastructures to prevent such crimes against women, fair allocation of budget to prevent sexual crimes and conducting awareness programmes at schools, colleges and at community level as well.
It further maintained that the Chief Minister and MLA O Landhoni should not take the matter lightly, as the incident had happened in their Assembly constituencies.
Meanwhile, the All Manipur Government Higher Secondary Lecturers Welfare Association has demanded that the State police should submit the charge sheet of the case of alleged rape and murder of the girl, a student of the Thoubal Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School, as soon as possible for further court procedure, in a press release.
Meanwhile the All India Stidents’ Federation, Manipur State Council has blamed the State government and its failure of governance against the backdrop of increasing crime against women and children in the State.
In a statement, it said politicians or political parties should not try to take political mileage out of sensitive issues by playing blame game. Instead, it is high time to act collectively without wasting any time further, it said.
A body consisting of all political parties of the State should be formed to address the issue rather than shout slogans during the time of election, it said.
The AISF is all set to organise a State level public meeting in connection with the issue, so as to find ways and means to prevent the heinous crimes, added the statement.
