IMPHAL, December 1: The Federation of Government College Teachers`™ Association Manipur has petitioned the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Imphal highlighting the neglect of higher education by the State government.
According to a statement, the petition highlighted the violations of UGC regulations 2010 by the State government, including in the recent appointment of three college Principals.
The FEGOCTA appealed to the PM that the State government should not be allowed to distort National Education Higher Policies and UGC regulations of 2010, and Manipur should be made to become one of the progressive States in the fields of higher education, human resource development and economy in addition to sports, it maintained.
It said the teachers`™ federation requested the PM to direct the State government to recruit 25 regular Principals; to release arrears for 58 months from 2006 to 2010, and to avail 80 percent reimbursement from the Central government as already done by 28 States of India as per UGC regulations, and to release SCA and TA for 48 months.
Further, it drew the attention of the PM on the need to establish one IIT in the State, one National Institute of Mass Communication and one National Institute of South East Asian Studies.
The petition also maintained that FEGOCTA is concerned about the increasing crimes and harassment of the people of NE in Delhi and other parts of India. It requested the PM to enact a new law to prevent and punish those committing crime against the NE people. It also urged for inclusion of the history, culture and people of the NE region in the school curriculums for more awareness and better understanding of geopolitics and cultural diversities to bring harmony and unity of India.
The release also said that the federation has received a letter dated November 14, 2014 from the UGC, New Delhi in response to its earlier representations to the PM and Union HRD minister on the neglect of higher education and non-implementation of UGC regulations by the government of Manipur.
It welcomed the initiative of the HRD ministry for their response to take `appropriate action`™, it said.
