IMPHAL, Dec 11: The Governor of Manipur, Dr. KK Paul joined the people of Manipur in paying tribute to those brave ladies who rose against the colonial rule for their monopolistic trade practices and feudalism on the occasion of Nupilal day.
A press release of the Governor`™s Secretariat said Nupilal occupies a unique place in the history of the state as courage, sacrifice and patriotism of the Manipuri women came to the forefront during the year, 1939 to revolt against the export of rice as there was near famine condition prevailing in the state.
The womenfolk of Manipur have carried forward these qualities and continue contributing in economic and social development of the Manipuri society as well as tackling social evils. The tribute will be more meaningful if people resolve to make Manipur a more peaceful and prosperous state, it said.
The Governor once again wished a grand success to the Nupilal Celebration, 2014, it said.
