BISHNUPUR, December 6: A public meeting was held today at Oinam Bazar protesting the alleged assault of two elders while they were out for their usual morning walk at Yumnam Khunou, Bishnupur on November 5 morning around 4:30.
Sources said that the two identified as Sorenshangbam Maimu, 56 son of Nila and Kshetrimayum Madhai, 61 who were out for their usual morning walk from Oinam Bazar to Yumnam Khunou Thongkhong were severely assaulted by locals of Yumnam Khunou.
Protestors said that when the two morning joggers reached the Yumnam Khunou Thongkhong, they saw some four-five women standing there.
However, the group of women charged them of witchcraft and attacked and grabbed them. Soon some of the women started ringing the metal posts after which locals started coming out, they said.
The locals than took the two into a club premise and after blindfolding and tying their hands and legs started beating them, protestors at the Oinam bazaar said.
Oinam Nagar Panchayat chairperson O Budhi who chaired the public meeting said he had gone to the incident site on the fateful day and appealed to the people not to assault the two assuring that he will take all responsibilities for the two.
However, the Yumnam Khunou locals didn`™t pay heed to his appeals, he lamented.
Soon the OC in charge of Nambol police arrived and was trying to pacify the mob, when Madhai fell unconscious he said adding that the police team rushed him to the hospital.
Family members also said that the two are getting treatment at the hospital.
Meanwhile, during the public meeting held today, the locals resolved to make those involved in the assault of the two to pay compensation, acknowledging their wrong conduct through the media and to file a FIR and punish them all.
It is also learnt that Maimu had recently undergone a brain surgery, while, Madhai had taken voluntary retirement from his job with the Electricity Department due to some illness. The two of them had been advised by their doctors to go for walks and as such they used to go for walks together.
