Security tightened in view of R-Day boycott

IMPHAL, January 21: Security preparations in the State have been tightened over the past few days in view of the January 26 Republic Day observation which has been boycotted by several armed outfits of the region as in the past years.

The run up to the R-Day has also witnessed repeated IED explosions in the State, even as security forces are intensifying their security measures.

Combing and search operations are witnessed on a daily basis in the State capital over the past few days.

A team of security personnel led by additional SP (ops) H Bikramjit Singh conducted a combing and search operation at Wahengbam Leikai, Jiri Parking lot today from 4 pm to 5 pm.

Several individuals including five non-locals who failed to provide any identification proof were held and released later after proper verification.

Earlier a similar operation was conducted at Naoremthong Khumanthem Leikai starting from 4:30 am and continuing till 6:30 am.

Four individuals were held during the operation and handed over to the Lamphel Police.

The operation was led by deputy SP (Ops) Netrajit and OC Imphal West Sanjoy.

Meanwhile, according to a PRO Police statement, a team of District Police Commando, Imphal West conducted search operation at some suspected houses in Tera Sadokpam Leikai area acting on reliable information about the movement of some active members of UNLF organisation, it said.

During the search operation, one cadre of UNLF organisation, identified as s/s sergeant major, Irom Rakesh Singh alias Thabungtomba alias Apabi (35), son of (L) I Tomba Singh of Kwakeithel Heinoukhongnembi Thokchom Leikai who is presently staying at Tera Sadokpam Leikai was arrested, it said.

Incriminating articles were seized from his possession. A case has been registered at Lamphel Police Station and investigation is going on, it said.

Further on January 20, a combined team of District Police Commando, Thoubal and 22 Assam Rifles launched cordon and search operation in and around Wabagai area to flush out UG elements in connection with the ensuing Republic Day celebration, 2015.

During the operation, one KYKL cadre identified as Nameirakpam Devananda Meitei, 43, son of N Bijoy Singh of Wabagai Kadajit Maning Leikai was arrested from Wabagai Kadajit Maning Leikai, it said.

Investigation revealed that he was involved in the recruitment of new cadres of KYKL organisation. A case has been registered at Kakching Police Station and investigation is going on, it added.
