IMPHAL, Feb 28: Retired academic and former minister, Prof. Gangmumei Kamei, has been nominated as a member of the newly re-constituted Indian Council of Historical Research, according to a notification of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, published in the Gazette of India, Section-1.
The notification dated February 24, lists 18 new members selected after the term of the previous ICHR expired on December 22, 2014, and Prof. Gangmumei`s name figures fifth in the list.
The term of the new ICHR is three years with effect from the date of the resolution constituting the new body or the date of the first meeting of the re-constituted Council, whichever is later, the notification further said.
Prof. Gangmumei, it may be noted, has been a towering figure in the academic world in Manipur and the country, and is the author of several book on history of Manipur. He has also contributed numerous articles on history of Manipur and the Northeast, its people, customs and traditions for various reputed journals, both academic as well as mainstream media.
As a public intellectual, he has also never confined himself to the world of academia and have always strived to put theory into practice bring his theoritical understanding of issues to various public forums as an activist as well as a politician.
