IMPHAL, April 15: One day capacity building workshop on `Role of Women in Climate Change Adaptation` was held today at VC, s Court Hall, MU here today.
The workshop was organised by Manipur University Working Women`™s Association (MUWWA) in collaboration with Climate Change Cell Directorate of Environment govt of Manipur.
Delivering the speech as the chief guest of the function Prof H N K Sarma, VC, MU stated that until natural catastrophe occurs the earth cannot be doomed.
But one should be cautious of the increase in population as there would be increase in demand of food, increase in energy consumption, industrial output which will cause hazards not only to the environment but for the humans too he added.
Professor HNK Sarma appealed to the people of the State to follow the Gandhian principles, law of nature to save the world by contributing a bit to control climate change.
Addressing as the chief guest of the function Dr M Homeshwor Singh, director, Directorate of Environment, govt of Manipur stated that all the natural systems are directly and indirectly linked to the climate change and any change in the climatic parameters are likely to disturb the efficiency of the functioning, impacting the resources and the associated economy.
He further said that according to the Indian Network for Climate Change Assessment (INCCA) has projected an increase in temperatures above 1.7 degree celsius and rainfall of 15-19% by mid 2030s in the State.
He said that with these projection of climate, Manipur has been highlighted vulnerable in four sectors namely water resources, forests, health and agriculture and its allied sectors.
While delivering the presidential speech of the function Asha Gupta, president, MUWWA said that the specific objectives of the workshop were to learn about adaptation actions being taken up in the village level, to enhance capacities for all section of peoples in the State for adaptation through understanding vulnerability index and prioritizing adaptation actions and also to understand opportunities and challenges for adaptation planning and implementation in the village level.
She further said that the expected outcome of the workshop would help in enhancing the understanding of the stakeholders on issues related to interpretation of climates trends.
The function was also attended by prof W Vishwanath, Dean School of Life Science, MU as the guest of honor.
