International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed

IMPHAL, June 26: The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2015 was widely observed in the State today.

The Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur also observed the day jointly with the FINGODEP Manipur Chapter and Coalition Against Drug and Alcohol (CADA), Manipur at the auditorium of Youth Affairs & Sports, Khuman Lampak, Imphal.

Speaking at the function, CADA president Yumnam Ratan Kumar said it was in the early 1970s that the drug menace started affecting the State, and Lilong was identified as a drug trafficking centre.

He continued today as much as we try to ban drugs, alcohol and other intoxicants, the more easily they are available in the State.

It is like as if there is a political hand in the issue, as the State is in conflict, he observed.

Speaking as the chief guest, PHE and Labour minister I Hemochandra said that the rise of NGOs working on the issue have aided much in controlling the menace in the State.

Manipur has both drug abusers and traffickers, but unfortunately there has been not a single case of conviction of such individual in the court of law.

Hemochandr further called for spreading of awareness on the issue to educate the public.

The function was also attended by Minister (Social Welfare & Co operation) Ak Mirabai and principal secretary (Social Welfare) SK Dev Verman, as president and guest of honour respectively.

CHANDEL, June, 26: International day of Drug abuse and illicit trafficking was observed in Chandel today with `Let`™s develop our lives, our community, our identity without drugs`™ as the theme of the day.

The program was organized by District Social Welfare Department Chandel in collaboration with Rural Upliftment and Development Society (RUDS), Chandel Christian.

District Aids Control Officer (DACO) Dr. Keshorjit Singh Moirangthem and Dr. Y Santosh attended the program as resource persons.

A drawing competition on the theme was held during which L.Mitha, Ruwngcho and Kapolhrin bagged first, second and third prize respectively in classes II-V.

Ps. Kankhu, NL Inhlungam and Kaunsha got the first, second and third position in VI-X classes.

Today`™s program was attended by about 200 students and dignitaries including District Social Welfare Officer, N Binoy Singh and District Programe Officer,ICDS, V. Ningthingla.
