IMPHAL, June 5: Anti-AFSPA crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila who has been on fast for the last 14 years demanding repeal of the draconian act from the state was produced before the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at the complex of Patiala House Court, Delhi today in connection with a case registered against her.
It may be mentioned that Parliament Street Police Station had arrested Sharmila in October, 2006 for staging hunger strike protest in pursuit of her demand at Jantar Mantar, Delhi. Subsequently, a case was registered against her under FIR No 222/06 U/S 309 IPC.
She had left Imphal yesterday for the court appearance after Ministry of Civil Aviation granted permission to let her travel by flight along with several state officials.
Hearing of the case began at 11.20 am. Deposition of the Investigation Officer (IO), Special Home Officer of Parliament Street Police Station and Record Holder of the case was taken during the hearing.
In connection with the case, deposition of two doctors and one police personnel will also be taken before the court tomorrow during which the anti-AFSPA crusader will be produced.
Meanwhile, in a hand-written note made available to the media, Sharmila stated that atrocities and human rights violations which occue in some States including Manipur where AFSPA is imposed could be avoided only after the large number of armies deployed in the States are removed.
She further stated that tactics of violence will never bring solution to any problems or issues.
In the written note, Sharmila observed that insurgency problem can be solved with love, kindness and motherly affection not by bloodshed.
She also mentioned that India is the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the great philosopher who always believed in non-violence.
