Students demand unconditional release of DESAM members

IMPHAL, June 19: Demanding unconditional release of the 16 members of Democratic Students`™ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), who were arrested by police for assaulting a computer science teacher of St Joseph School, Sangaiprou and subsequently remanded to six days police custody, students of Ibotonsana Girls`™ Higher Secondary School, Uripok and Anand Singh Academy, Sanjenthong staged sit-in-protests in front of their schools today.

The student protestors used placards such as `Release all the arrested DESAM members unconditionally`™, `Punish teachers who gave corporal punishment to students`™ etc at the protest sites.

Mention may be made that the computer science teacher namely Gurumayum Rupachandra Sharma, is charged of giving corporal punishment to a student of St Joseph School, Sangaiprou.

He was called by DESAM to hold a talk on the matter at its office but was allegedly beaten up.

Later, 16 members of the students`™ body including its president were arrested by personnel of Imphal Police Station on June 17 and registered a case against them.

They were produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West yesterday. The court remanded them to police custody for six days.
