IMPHAL, August 26: UGs attempted to ambush a column of Assam Rifles troops who were on patrol near Molanghat in Chandel district on August 21. As the patrol approached the ambush site, they were fired upon by the UGs followed by two IEDs, claimed a press release of PRO IGAR (South).

The militant fire was promptly countered by the SF patrol. The militants, however, managed to escape, taking advantage of rugged terrain and bad weather. Two soldiers who received minor injuries were promptly evacuated to Military Hospital Leimakhong and are now out of danger.

Later on, when the area was searched, Assam Rifles recovered eight more IEDs along the track and thus averted a major tragedy as they could have caused harm to innocent civilians as well, it said.

The UGs have a history of destroying the peace and tranquillity everywhere and this was no different. While the UGs`™ only aim is to perpetrate indiscriminate violence, the Assam Rifles has been at the forefront of providing help to the locals and ensures complete support every time the locals seek help or face any problem. This was most evident recently in the same area when the local Assam Rifles battalion took the lead in rescuing three civilians from Joumol village that was buried under a landslide on August 1. The consistent support efforts by Assam Rifles even in the face of such constant attacks have shown the true spirit of the force and their will to demoralize the UGs.

The UGs will plan more such indiscriminate attacks to harm the lives of innocent civilian inhabitants of the border areas as well. However, the `Friends of the North East`™ will be ever ready to meet all challenges to protect the innocents, the release stated.
