More hunger strikers join ILPS demand

IMPHAL, August 22: With the August 25 deadline, the government has announced for itself to come up with a new ILP bill approaching, hunger strikes and sit in protests have replaced other forms of agitations especially road blocks and other violent agitations in most parts of the valley districts today.

While yesterday witnessed 23 new hunger strikers demanding introduction of the ILPS in the State launch their strikes in several places including Imphal East, West, Yairipok and Thoubal, three individuals have also launched their hunger strikes in Imphal West.

Sit in protests were also staged at different places.

The three hunger strikers who came out today have been identified as class XII student of Akash Higher Secondary Schoo, Lourembam Dipu, 19, son of L Yaima Singh of Takyel Kolom Leikai; KCL executive member Tongbram Buster Singh, 25 and Beishamayum Puja Devi, 18, daughter of B Jadhumani Sharma of SIngjamei Wangma Torban Kshetri Leikai, Chanambam Leirak.

Budha is undergoing his fasting at the Takyel Kolom Leikai Waiting Shed, while Puja began her strike at the Singjamei Wangma Waiting Shed.

All three had come out to fill in for their predecessors who were all picked up yesterday by the police.

On the other hand, people of Haorang Keirel Youth Club, Haorang Keirel Kounu Leima Development Association with Luker Meira Paibi Lup and the Leitong Meira Paibi Lup staged a sit in protest at Haorang Thongkhong from 7am to 5pm.

The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) Imphal Branch also staged a sit in protest in front of their Khuyathong office.
