IMPHAL, September 12: A two-day national executive committee meeting of Indian Journalists`™ Union (IJU) began today at Kishan Bhavan, Chandigarh with Education Minister, Government of Punjab Dr Dalit Singh Cheema attending as guest of honor.
Secretary of IJU Ratan Luwangcha who is also the vice-president of All Manipur Working Journalists`™ Union (AMWJU) and general secretary Jit Ningomba were also present at the meeting being held as part of silver jubilee celebration of IJU.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Governor of Punjab Chandigarh Kaptan Singh Solanki said that Majithia Wage Board should be implemented in the country for the welfare of journalists.
He assured that the board will be implemented in Punjab Chandigarh at the earliest.
Noting the role of journalists in disseminating daily information to the masses against all odds, he appealed to journalists to adhere to its responsibilities in sustaining good governance in the respective States.
Dr Dalit Singh Cheema announced that the Punjab Government had covered health insurance of Rs 5 lakh each for the accredited journalists as part of the measures taken up to ensure welfare for the journalists of the State.
During the presentation of secretary general report of IJU, the AMWJU representatives referred to the media advocacy programme held recently in the State and expressed desire for holding such media skill enhance programme by other State units.
In the first day of the national executive committee meeting, State units tabled their respective report. Several national agendas will be adopted tomorrow.
