IMPHAL, October 28: A civilian was found dead at the site of a recent ambush. It may be mentioned that troops of 44AR was ambushed by cadres of the PLA on October 26, the attack occurred at Huining Lamkhai which is located about 10 kilometres from Chassad Police Station.
One JCO of the AR was killed and some were grievously wounded in the insurgent ambush.
It was in the aftermath of the attack that a body was found near the ambush site. The bullet ridden corpse is identified by Police as one Ajit Bahadur Tamang, 65, s/o late Gyan Tamang of Kangpokpi and at present residing at Sampui Village, the village is located in between Chassad and Kamjong.
Sources mentioned that he is a farmer and went to herd his cattle near the mentioned ambush site on the said day. He had four bullet wounds on his person and reports said that the shots were fired probably from close range. Police reports mentioned that he was wearing a camouflage pant and might have strayed into the ambush area. He may have been a victim of mistaken identity from either the Assam Rifles or the insurgents, the reports mentioned.
The body was brought to RIMS for post mortem and handed over to family members today. It may be mentioned that a JCO of the 44 AR, Suraj Tamang, JC number 65809 of F company was killed in the ambush.
