IMPHAL, December 15: A joint meeting of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) convened today at Manipur Press Club, has vehemently condemned the threat served to editors and journalists by a leader claiming to be from an underground outfit over publication of news and the bomb placed at the residence of editor-in-chief of Impact TV Yumnam Rupachandra who is also the general secretary of EGM yesterday night.
After having a threadbare discussion, the meeting adopted certain resolutions regarding the threats served to the media.
It resolved to leave the editorial column of all the newspapers on December 16 blank as a mark of condemnation against the unwarranted threats.
The journalist fraternity also decided to stage a sit-in-protest at Keishampat on December 16 from 10 am. They will stay off normal duty on the day and there will be no publication of local dailies the next day.
It was also resolved to halt telecast of electronic media including ISTV, Impact TV and Image TV from 6 am of the day to 6 am of December 17.
AMWJU and EGM in the meeting also decided to take out a silent rally after the sit-in-protest demonstration and submit a memorandum each to the Chief Minister and Dy CM to ensure adequate security for editors, office bearers of the journalists’ union and media persons. The meeting appealed to all the concerned outfits to abstain from directing media houses to publish news according to their whims forcibly.
