Manipuri Woman among reputed designers of handloom to showcase her collections

IMPHAL, December 29: Under Tantavi series on the theme of Tradition and Trend, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India brought out an exhibition called ‘‘India Handloom’’, and a woman from Manipur Chirom Indira, an entrepreneur, designer, exporter and social worker, has been selected among some reputed designers across the country to take part and showcase their collections in the series, said a press release.

It said, the exhibition which will be concluded on December 31 was inaugurated by Minister for Textiles (I/C), Government of India on December 22 at Craft Museum, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Chirom Indira has been selected for her series of products which are of diversified items with traditional touch design of Home furnishings, and she is also featured in Prayas, a compiled success story of Handlooms launched by Prime Minister of India on August 7, on the First National Handloom Day held at Chennai, said the press release.

It said, Chirom Indira who is from Thangmeiband Lairenhanjaba Leikai, Imphal West has contributed dedicated for the development of weaker sections and women empowerment through handloom Sector for the past 20 years and has become a well known figure of the North Eastern Region of India.

Hand woven textiles have always been a rich source of one’s tradition. As per the census report of 2009-10, there are 23.77 lakh looms across the country, out of which 14.11 lakh are in North Eastern Region, and similarly out of 43.32 lakh persons engaged in weaving and allied activities, 21.56 lakh are in North Eastern Region and out of 38.47 lakh adult weaver and allied workers, 9.44 lakh are in North Eastern Region, said the press release.
