“NE still dependent on Centre”

IMPHAL, December 20: The north east region of the country is still dependent on the Central government for resources, Prof MP Bezbaruah of the department of Economics, Gauhati University said during the opening day of a two-day National Seminar on Economic Transformation in Northeast India Predicaments, Potentials and Policies.

He was speaking as a guest of honour at the seminar organised by the Department of Economics, Manipur University at the conference hall of the department. The seminar was sponsored by ICSSR, New Delhi.

Prof Bezbaruah further said that every community having its own language has the legitimacy to promote themselves but demanding homeland for each community is impossible.

He added that it is more appropriate to mention that it should be a homeland for many communities.

The Economic professor also made a slideshow presentation during which he presented a slide reading “Progress towards a modernized economy set-up can be the best antidote to homeland centric identity assertions.”

School of Social Sciences, Manipur University Dean Prof E Bijoykumar Singh speaking as the chief guest said that the seminar was an appropriate platform for discussion on the issue and that the ideas shared during the seminar should be introduced in more academic sessions.

He said although the region is still dependent on the Centre, unless the people of the region understand, all the constructive policies of the Centre may not be realised.

He also said of all the States in the region, Tripura has better governance.

He also called upon the people to raise the quality of debates to bring constructive development in the region.

The inaugural function of the two-day national seminar was also attended by Head, Department of Economics, MU Prof Amar Yumnam as president.
