IMPHAL, December 29: The All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) observed the ‘35th Suba Meira Paibee Houdokhiba Numit’ at Lamyanba Sanglen, Palace Compound here today.

The function was attended by Keisham ongbi Taruni, president of Nupi Samaj; Hidangmayum ongbi Brojeshwori, advisor of Nupi Samaj; Phanjoubam ongbi Sakhi, president of Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup; Soibam ongbi Momon, president of All Manipur Tami Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup; Aribam Sitara Begam, president of All Manipur Muslim Women Development Organisation; Rose Mangshi Haokip, president of Kuki Women Union Manipur and Kakomlunglu Kamei, president of Kabui Mother Association as presidium members.

Giving her keynote address, general secretary of Nupi Samaj Thokchom ongbi Ramani shared how the Meira Paibee movement started and atrocities committed by the security forces towards the innocents which led to night vigil by women folk in their neighbourhoods holding burning torches.

She recalled that an innocent local from Heirangoithong was rescued from the clutches of JK Regiment of the Indian Army on December 29, 1980 and from this day onwards, womenfolk holding burning torches came out to the streets to prevent the security forces from entering any locality and picking up individuals without following the proper procedures.

Expressing deep concern on the prevailing women issues in the State including harassment of daughter-in-law by mother-in-law, she appealed to the people to prevent such kind of issues by correcting ‘oneself’.

Ramani also pointed out that there is something very wrong in the way “we dress, we talk, we call names” in the present society.

“Let mothers and sisters of the valley and hills approach each other to strengthen the bonding and bring peace and prosperity in the society,’’ she prayed.
