Police taking illegal tax for transporting cattle for X-mass feast: Church leader

IMPHAL December 23: A Church elder has claimed that certain personnel of the police are involved in taking illegal taxes from Christmas shoppers.

Chingjaopao Phaomei a church elder of Namdulong Baptist Church claimed during a press conference at the Manipur Press Club that personnel of the Lamshang Police Station taken Rs 2000 on the allegation that a cow meant for a Christmas feast is a stolen animal this morning around 11 while the cow was being brought from Tairenpokpi.

‘Even after the Jilla Parishad, pradhan and owner of the cow testified with documents, they still insist on paying the amount before freeing the animal’ Phaomei and Dishingam Gangmei, 2015 Christmas Festival Secretary of the church claimed.

Phaomei said we don’t object to interrogation and verification process which is part of their duty, but the conduct of the police personnel is unfortunate.

He further claimed that the police of demanding illegal taxes.

He said bulls, cows, pigs are bought from different markets and transported to various villages for the Chirstmans feast and at times this mobility is intercepted by the police often with the allegation of carrying stolen goods which is both a humiliating harassment and a delaying factor.

Chingjaopao Phaomei, ‘We would like to appeal to the police personnel to abstain from indulging in such looting and instead assist the thousand people coming from the hill districts for Christmas shopping.
