BISHNUPUR, January 20: The situation in Torbung area of Bishnupur district remains tense following clashes between a group supporting the Teddim Road and Moirang-Kumbi Road bandh imposed by the JAC against the renaming of Thangjing to “Thangting” and another group which was against the bandh.
Following the tension in the area neighbouring Churachandpur district, magistrates of both the districts, namely Churachandpur and Bishnupur, have clamped prohibitory order under CrPC 144 with immediate effect until further notice.
Following the clash police teams of the two districts led by Churachandpur SP and the Moirang Police SDPO rushed to the area and contained the situation from further escalation.
In the process, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and blank fired live rounds as protestors from both sides pelted stone against each other and the police.
During the clash at least 10 persons are reportedly injured including two women personnel of the 9 IRB.
The victims have been identified as Nengchin wife of Hemlal of Jalenphai, Lalboy, 31, son of Kamjalun of V Kolmun from Churachandpur District, Veinei, 40, wife of Tonlal of Torbung, Thingom Sapana Devi, 30, wife of Th Tomba Singh, Thokchom Bijenti Devi, 25, daughter of Th Biramani Singh, Thongam Keinahanbi Devi, 50, wife of Th Dhananjoy Singh, Longjam Sanathoi Devi, 30, wife of L Sanjit Singh and Khumukcham Pramo Devi, 38, wife of Kh Yaima Singh of Bishnupur District.
Identity of the injured personnel cannot be ascertained till the filing of this report.
The injured from Churachandpur were rushed to the Churachandpur district hospital and those from Bishnupur have been taken to the Bishnupur District Hospital.
Later additional force led IGP(Zone-II) Kailun and SPs of both the district rushed to the scene.
The police team met with the agitating groups including Zila Parishad members, Uppa Pradhan members, locals and leaders of the movement against the renaming of Thangjing as Thangting and assured to deploy a 500 strong police force including the IGP and 10 teams of Imphal West and East commandos in the area for the night.
