IMPHAL, January 3: The presence of Modern College connects to sentiment with the local populace of Imphal East, guardians, students, teaching faculty of the college. The Cabinet decision to shift the college to accommodate expansion of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) will provoke tense and chaotic situation in the area, said retired Addl SP and president of Modern College Alumni Association Ksh Janma Singh.
He was addressing media persons after a detailed meeting held among its staff, student union, ALUMNI Association and founder members today at the premises of the college located at Porompat, Imphal East.
Janma said that the boundary of the college was demarcated as 15 acres of land in 1964 with the help of local populace who have immense attachment with the educational institute.
He cautioned that the government`™s decision to shift the college will invite inevitable wrath.
Secretary of ALUMNI Association Ng Devendro Meetei mentioned that on June 7, 2011, the association submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging to withdraw the Cabinet decision of shifting of Modern College to another site for which former Minister Ngairangbam Tomba exerted pressure to revoke the decision.
He mentioned that in city area, a hospital can be upgraded to its desire within 10 acres of land.
Modern college having accommodation of about 2000 pupils of has been in service rendering education to the students for more than 50 years.
The college has produced many first class officers in the State, he said, adding that the college is equipped with modern science laboratory and has came up to the present promising status with grants/aids from funding agencies like UGC.
General secretary of the students union of the college Chipemmi Keising on behalf of students said that the government`™s decision will create havoc.
He further said that the college is already well situated nearing police station, hospital and well connected.
To prevent uprising from the students it will be wise for the government to revoke the Cabinet decision to shift the Modern College to another site just to accommodate expansion of JNIMS, said founder member A Jotinkumar Singh.
