IMPHAL, January 24: Amidst chaos and unrest over the construction of temporary market shed at Thangal Bazar, the State government has resolved to halt the much-hyped construction.

This was conveyed by Education and CAF & PD Minister Moirangthem Okendro during a press briefing held at his office chamber today.

Okendro who is also the government’s spokesperson explained that the decision was taken after a resolution came to accommodate the displaced women vendors at Tribal market, Purana Bazaar and Temporary Market.

He said that the severe tussle between licensed and unlicensed women vendors over the temporary market shed construction was considered before making the decision.

The Minister assured that the government will take up construction work for the market sheds on war footing to accommodate around 1900 women vendors.

About 1000 women vendors can be accommodated at Temporary Market, 400-430 at Tribal Market and 600 at Purana Bazar, he elaborated.

Okendro declared that the blockage along the entrance of Thangal Bazar will be removed once the displaced women vendors are accommodated at the market areas.

Cooperation from the people as well as initiative of all the political parties is required to exert pressure on the Central government to mitigate the loss incurred to Ima Markets in the recent earthquake, he said.

Maintaining that the displaced women vendors do not want to sell wares at the newly constructed marker shed at Lamphel Super Market from business perspective, Minister Okendro announced that the government has decided to constitute Vending Committee under Street Vendor Act at the earliest to demarcate vending zones.
