IMPHAL, January 23: The Manipur Peoples`™ Party today asserted that the Congress government in the State has survived this far only because of the anti-defection law.

Speaking to media persons at the party office today, MPP president N Sovakiran charged the State government of totally failing to take up welfare measures for the people.

He lamented the construction of a market shed upon the Thangal Bazar Road as inappropriate.

In case of an emergency emerging in the area, it will be difficult for any help to arrive in time, he said.

At the same time, accommodating the displaced women vendors on the road itself will be of much discomfiture for the passers-by and shoppers alike, he observed.

Is Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh ready to take full responsibility in case of any untoward incident arising out of the situation due to the blocking off of the road, he questioned.

He added the government must provide a space for the displaced women vendors at the earliest; however, the space should be a convenient place for business as well as the passers-by.

At the same time, the government`™s silence on the suffering of the displaced women vendors is unfortunate, he claimed.

Sovakiran also charged that the damage suffered by the two Ima Keithels during the January 4 earthquake was due to poor quality construction and failure to meet construction norms.

The Chief Minister should announced welfare schemes for the quake affected women vendors and bring a solution to the present issue surrounding construction of the temporary market shed, he added.

The MPP leader also lamented that the Chief Minister had in his Statehood Day observation speech declared that there will be instability in payment of salaries for the government employees due to shortage of funds sanctioned by the Centre.
