Neuromotility lab to be set up in JNIMS as Harvard faculty donates medical equipments

IMPHAL, January 2: Dr Alin Vaiculi Botoman, a renowned Gastro Intestinalmotility Physician who served as the Chairman of Cleveland Clinic, Florida, USA and currently a Harvard faculty has donated his equipments to Dr Nongthombam Surajkumar and JNIMS Hospital.

Dr Nongthombam Surajkumar who went as an exchange fellow in Liver disease at Harvard, USA also ended up completing a short term Fellowship in Neuromotility and Functional bowel disease under Dr Braden Kuo who is the Director of Neuromotility and Functional Bowel disease at Harvard.

Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr Botoman who is also a member of the motility team at Harvard asked Dr.Suraj Kumar if he has got Neuromotility equipments back at Imphal to which Dr Suraj Kumar responded that there were no Neuromotilitym equipments not only in Manipur but in the entire North eastern region and that it is available in only a few premier institutes in India.

Just out of the blue, Dr Botoman told Dr Suraj Kumar that he can donate his entire neuromotility laboratory and said it should be used to serve the people of Manipur and also for Medical education and research to which Dr.Suraj Kumar readily agreed.

The equipments consist of Esophageal manometry, anorectal manometry, 24 hour pH metry, Impedence, EMG and pelvic floor biofeedback – a whole complete set to set up an entire neuromotility laboratory which will be set up at JNIMS Medicine Department.

Mention may be made that this entire set of neuromotility equipments are not yet available in any of the north-eastern States in India and the neuromotiliy lab at JNIMS is going to be one of the few centres in entire India.

These equipments will be used to diagnose motility disorders of esophagus, rectum, heart burn and chest pain due to acid and non acid reflux and also to treat rectal incontinence and constipation.

These equipments will be set up as soon as possible if the circumstance permit but it is said that Dr Suraj Kumar needs some time to build up a team as he cannot run it alone.

Once the lab is set up, Dr Botoman himself will come to Manipur for a talk and also perform a few procedures by himself.
