IMPHAL, Jan 13: In the aftermath of the earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale which jolted the State in the early morning of January 4 leaving at least eight dead and scores injured, the people especially in Tamenglong and Senapati districts continue to fear aftershocks.
At the same time, support continues to come in from all quarters. The Workers’ Union Manipur today announced some financial support to those affected by the quake.
Making the announcement today at the Manipur Press Club, president of the union K London said WUM has 130 workers employed on salary basis and around 40 porters as daily wage earners.
He said the 130 or so salaried staff of the union will contribute half of their one day’s salary for the relief fund while the 40 or so porters will sell tea at Paona Bazar and Thangal bazar to raise funds for the quake victims.
London said that the porters will go round the most congested market places of the State to sell team tomorrow and the funds collected along with the half of the one day salaries of the other staff will be donated to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the quake victims.
He further appealed to all the people to co-operate and support in the endeavour.
People should also contribute to the relief fund to help build a stronger unity in the State, he added.
Meanwhile, it may be mentioned that the State government has already sought Rs 500 crore as relief fund from the Centre.
