IMPHAL, March 8: If the State government actually cares for women of the society, Irom Chanu Sharmila wouldn’t have been the way she is today, and the Armed Forces Specials Powers Act would have been already repealed, BJP Manipur president Chaoba said during an international women’s day observation cum Legal Awareness programme today.
The observation was held at Singjamei Oinam Thingel Community Hall organized by the Women for social Change under the sponsor of State Legal Service Authority.
Continuing his speech, he said the State government has no concern whatsoever for women.
The Ibobi led Congress government is only waiting for Sharmila to die, otherwise it would have considered her more than 15 years agitation and repealed the AFSPA a long time back, he said.
Chaoba complained that the government has already removed the disturbed Area Status from Greater Imphal areas and so it could remove it from the other areas as well.
He added if we want our society to move forward we need more participation in electoral politics by women.
He continued the Parliament is also discussing 33 percent women reservation in law making bodies.
Chaoba continued that womenfolk have played a crucial role in the society be it in the capacity of a Nisha bandh or Meira Paibi.
He further appealed to the people to strengthen women empowerment in the State to fight corruption.
