Chinikon rape victim laid to rest after 8 days in morgue

IMPHAL, March 7: The last rites of the 8 year old Chinikon rape victim was performed today at her native village, Chinikon after her mortal remain was claimed by JAC formed against the incident and family members.

The mortal remain of the minor girl was handed over to the family after post mortem conducted at the RIMS mortuary this morning.

Many civil body leaders of Zeliangrong community, well wishers today converged at the mortuary from where the mortal remain of the minor girl was escorted to her native village.

A condolence service was also organised the Chinikon.

It is learnt that the JAC and family members accepted the body following an understanding brought between the government and Zeliangrong Union customary court in a series of meeting.

The JAC reportedly met the deputy Chief Minister, who is also holding the home portfolio, yesterday.

In the meeting the Home minister gave his strong assurance to take necessary action against the accused as demanded by the JAC and ensured that befitting punishment will be awarded, sources said.

In the meantime, the JAC also reportedly convened a meeting with the Zeliangrong Union customary court along with the accused’s family wherein the court decided to impose a fine on the accused family.

Following the decision of the customary court, a 200/200 sq feet long site was provided as resting place of the victim and to build a memorial complex in her memory. All expenses of the funeral services and construction of the memorial complex will be brone by the accused’s family.

It may be mentioned that the 8 year old victim was raped and tortured by a boy from the same village on the evening of February 14 last.

The victim, was rushed to RIMS hospital however succumbed to her injuries on February 28.

The accused who is claimed to be only 14 by the family was kept at the Juvenile observation home.

However, the JAC formed against the incident demanded servere punishment for the accused, even death sentence, claiming that the accused is 18 year old.

To mount pressure on the government with regards to its demands, the JAC submitted memorandums to the Chief Minister, Home minister besides attempting to storm the recently concluded full budget session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
