IMPHAL, March 18: A mob of irate womenfolk of Khurai Angom Leikai accompanied by family members of (L) Laishram Romita tried to storm the Raj Medicity this evening charging that negligence of doctors during an operation in the hospital had led to her death on March 16.
However, police managed to stop the mob from getting inside the hospital premises.
Earlier in the day, womenfolk of the locality staged a sit in protest at Khurai Angom Leikai Lai Haraobung Mantak demanding proper investigation from the authorities concerned against the doctor involved in Romita’s death.
Later, around 3:30pm, the protestors came in three wheelers till Raj Medicity and tried to storm into the hospital.
It may be mentioned that Romita wife of L Senapati was shot at by some miscreants on February 19 following which she was admitted at the Raj Medicity for treatment, but unfortunately she succumbed on March 16 at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
Romita received three bullet injuries, when some unidentified miscreant shot at her and two other customers inside her restaurant Ningthibee Restaurant located at Khurai Angom Leikai under Lamlai Police Station on February 19.
Since the incident, she was being admitted and treated at the Raj Medicity, however, after her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), said a protestor.
Romita’s family has also announced that they will not accept the body until the authorities take action against the doctor involved.
The family has filed a case regarding the death.
Meanwhile, clarifying on the JAC’s claim, Raj Medicity assistant manager Ksh Dinesh sad no error has been recorded during the operation.
He said Romita was discharged from the hospital in full knowledge of the family members.
Romita was brought to the hospital on February 19, following which the doctors attended to her, he said. She was operated twice on her chest and stomach in the hospital by separate doctors, he added.
Once, her condition improved a little, her family members wanted to take her home due to some financial constraints, he added.
Romita was discharged on March 9, but was advised by the doctors to come for check-ups on alternate days, Dinesh said.
However, notwithstanding the doctor’s advice, the family failed to bring Romita to the hospital for any check-up, and after six days of her discharge from the hospital, reports of her death emerged, he said.
Dinesh said the hospital authority will not take responsibility for the death, stating that her death didn’t happen in their hospital.
She might have survived if she was brought for regular medical check-up as per the advice of the doctors.
