BISHNUPUR, April 17: A Gram Kishan Sabha was conducted today at the Keinou Thongkha Community Hall organised by the Keinou GP with the aim to strengthen the panchayati raj system and help the farmers.
Keinou Zilla Parishad member L Sumati Devi, Keinou GP Pradhan W Homeshwar, Up Pradhan of the GP N Somendro and ward member Sunitibala attended the function as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Bishnupur Horticulture AO Nabachandra and AMS Dr M Thoiba attended as resource persons.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Thoiba said due to the rapid rise in population in the country, the use of chemical fertilizer to meet the demand for food grains have also increased.
However, even though the use of chemical fertilizers have enabled in meeting the demand, it has many drawbacks, he added.
He said today there is a need to encourage the use of organic fertilizers as continued usage of chemical fertilizer will only lessen the fertility of the land.
Stressing that eating vegetables which are grown using insecticides and chemical fertilizers can increase the risk of cancer, he encourage the use of organic fertilizers instead.
Meanwhile, a similar Gram Kishan Sabha was also held at Ishok organised by the Ishok Gram Panchayat.
The function was attended by Leimapokpam Zilla Parishad member L Tunambi Leima, Ishok GP Pradhan A Sangeeta and panchayat secretary of the GP S Indrashwar as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
A quiz competition was also held as part of the function.
The Sanjenbam Pukhrambam GP also organised as similar Gram Kishan Sabha at Sanjenbam which was attended by retd headmaster Kha Sanjenbam High School N Ibohal, GP Pradhan N Tomba Meitei, up Pradhan L Sorojini and YUC Sanjenbam president N Birjit Meitei as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
A tug of war completion was also held as part of the function.
The Irengbam GP also organised a similar Gram Kishan Sabha today with retd headmaster Irengbam HS Th Maipak, GP Pradhan Th Matouleibi Radhe, up Pradhan Sorojini Leima as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
