Protest march staged against assault on Muslim students

IMPHAL, April 9: In protest against the State government’s action on the brutal assault of six Manipuri Muslim students at Iram Siphai when they were going to see Thabal Chongba on March 25 during the Yoashang festival, Delhi Association of Manipur Muslim Students (DAMMS) organized ä protest march to the Manipur Bhawan, SP Marg, New Delhi.

The association in a press release said various slogans were raised by a large number of students hailing from Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia University in front of the Manipur Bhawan.

Stating that NEFIS, Delhi also extended solidarity to the protest, it said a memorandum was submitted to Chief Minister of the State through Resident Commissioner demanding immediate arrest of the culprit (s) and take up necessary action to check such incident in future.

The association demanded the CM to safeguard minorities’ interest and guarantee the right to life and provide the financial assistance to the victims for medical treatment.

Three of the victims are being treated at hospitals in Guwahati due to the seriousness of injury, it said.

It further demanded increase of security patrolling in the communally sensitive areas.

If the government fails to take actions within one week, the association along with various student organizations and civil societies based in Manipur and Delhi will take up further steps and continue protests to get justice to the case.
