KANGPOKPI, April 18: With massive response from student’s community, a ‘Sanitization Drive of Senapati River’ organized by Senapati District Students’ Association and the District Administration supported by the All Private School Association Senapati and Senapati Police was conducted on Saturday.
Collecting dirt and garbage dumped into the famous water source, the students and residents of Monday market colony, Makhrelui and Senapati TNK Villages demonstrated an exemplary act of keeping the river clean and sanitized.
SDSA team and District Administration officials also participated in the drive all along the cleaning sites.
Considered one of the most important and depended water source for a fast growing DHQ town residents, the river was turning into a dumping site and a drain.
Taking up the uphill task of cleaning the river, the SDSA and Senapati District Administration decided to organise a joint venture to create awareness and execute a long term exercise of keeping the river clean.
With a turnout of more than 1000 participants from schools, residents, civil bodies, volunteers, Senapati police, teachers, Makhrelui village colonies, village leaders and others, deputy commissioner Jacintha Lazarus also paid a physical visit to different sites of the cleanliness drive.
Armed with shovel, hand gloves, plastics, spades, bamboos and other equipments, students and participants actively managed to collect the dirt which was picked by Town committee and hired dumpers after the social works. Residents and general public acknowledge the cleaning gesture. The SDSA and District Administration is likely to come up with long term strategy of keeping the river clean, source added.
According to SDSA, it believes the physical involvement of students, local residents and stakeholders in the mass social work is one of the practical means to educate the woes garbage and solid waste that are dumped conveniently along the senapati river stretch. SDSA President Pungdi celestine also mentioned that, the cleanliness drive has given a temporary lease of life to the river. The SDSA and citizens are encouraged by the seriousness of the District Administration in stradegising to put in place mechanism and measures that are required to sustain in keeping the health of the river clean.
