IMPHAL, April 5: Fresh eruption of smoke and ashes at Shitru near Old Wahong Village under Jessami block in Ukhrul district has spark apprehension and tension among people of the surrounding villages, according to local villagers.
Speaking to this IFP reporter over the phone, a villager of Old Wahong Village identified as Ramshim said a few village youth came across this volcano like eruption on Monday.
He said a similar phenomenon was witnessed at this time last year also, following which experts from the Manipur University had arrived to look into it.
He said the experts however, failed to give any reason for the volcano like eruption and formation of craters.
The area is located near the border of Manipur, Nagaland and Myanmar and is around 150 Km from Imphal.
It may be mentioned that, the last year the villagers said they first sighted smoke emitting from the crater in the month of April, but ignored it thinking it to be burning pine roots.
