IMPHAL, May 13: Two-day sitting of the first independent people’s tribunal on crime against women has concluded today at Classic Hotel with 20 victim families presenting their testimonies on the last day.
After the conclusion of the presentation of testimonies before the two-member panel, WA Shishak, former Chief Justice, High Court of Chhattisgarh and Dr KS Subramanian IPS (retd) former Director General of Police stat of Tripura, five experts delivered lectures on various topic related to crimes against women.
Today’s experts were Babloo Loitongbam, Director of Human Right Alert, who delivered his talk on Mob Justice and Criminal Justice System; IK Muivah, DIG Range-I who spoke about Crime against Women and the Challenges of Manipur Police; Dr Supriya, Medico Legal expert, Forensic Medicine Department of RIMS who spoke on the topic Forensic Expert Opinion on Crime against Women: An Experience; Ngangbam Tejkumar, former Director of Prosecution who spoke on Criminal Trial on Crime against Women: A Perspective; and U Nobokeshore, Secretary UNMM, who spoke about Why People Indulge Violence as an Alternative Form of Remedy.
After the experts delivered their speeches, the panel mulled preparation of concrete recommendations on crime against women after having consultation with high ranking police officers of the state today. The meeting between the team of WAD, panel members and police officers was attended by around 51 police officers led by Additional SP S Ibomcha, four SDPOs and IOs of various police stations.
Meanwhile, WAD secretary M Sobita Devi said the recommendation for the tribunal will be announced after gaining approval by the panel and announced after submission to chief minister Okram Ibobi.
Ngangom Tejkumar has urged the panel to recommend installation of a DNA test machine in state informing that the cost of the machine is only Rs 3-4 lacs and a first track court specially to deal with crimes against women.
IK Muivah highlighted the role of Manipur Police in fighting crimes against women during the last two years. Separate women police station has been opened at Imphal West district and cases related to the gender taken up and submitted charge-sheets but most of the cases are pending in court, he stated confirming his agreement on the need for a first track court for women related cases.
