IMPHAL, May 21: Police have apprehended a man who is the accused in the alleged rape and murder of a 20-year-old housewife at Uchiwa Lamhang under Mayang Imphal Police Station on May 19 morning.
The accused was identified as Akhongbam Dijen Singh, 24 son of Tarpon Singh of Mayang Imphal Thana Awang Leikai. He was arrested by Mayang Imphal Police yesterday.
Dijen was remanded to police custody for 10 days till May 30 after he was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class/Imphal West at Lamphel today.
Rigorous interrogation of the accused is going on by the police following his remand.
Meanwhile, post mortem examination of the housewife identified as Wahengbam ningol Ichal Devi, daughter of late Birkumar Singh of Sekmaijin Khunou Mayai Leikai was conducted today at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) morgue.
However, the body is yet to be accepted by the deceased’s family and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the alleged rape and murder.
