IMPHAL, May 18: In all 87 councillor aspirants will fight for 27 seats in the upcoming Imphal Municipal Corporation elections and 129 candidates have entered the fray to vie for 54 seats (two seats for each ward) after their nomination papers were cleared during scrutiny held today.
This time Congress and BJP have fielded 26 candidates each for the 27 wards, the same number as independents, while CPI has 5, LJP has 3 and JDU has only one.
Today, the returning officer of Imphal West district conducted scrutiny of nomination papers at Lamphel and all 64 candidates were given clearance. Also, all 92 candidates of ward development committee members were cleared after scrutiny. For 20 seats of IMC in Imphal West district Congress and BJP will fight in all wards, while CPI has send up three candidates, LJP two and JDU one, besides 18 independent candidates.
For Imphal East district all 23 councillor candidates and 37 ward members from various political parties were cleared after scrutiny by the RO of Imphal East without any rejection.
Among them six each are from BJP and Congress party, two from CPI, one from LJP and eight are independent candidates.
Of the 37 ward development members cleared after scrutiny of nomination papers, 18 are for first ward member and 19 are second ward member contestant. No nomination was filed for one ward in Imphal East district.
The total electorate for the IMC election is 175864 out of which 84045 are male and 91819 are female and total number of polling station is 255 as per official record.
The last date of withdrawal of nomination papers is May 20, 2016. The poll day is June 2, 2016. If the need arise, re-poll will be conducted on June 4, 2016. Counting of votes will take place on June 6, 2016.
