Imphal, May 25 : Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Hospital opened the State’s first eye bank at the hospital today. The inaugural programme that was held at JNIMS conference hall was graced by Health and Family Welfare Minister DK Korungthang, Health and Family Welfare Director Dr O Ibomcha, JNIMS Hospital Director Professor Deven Laishram and HOD (Eye), JNIMS Hospital Professor K Nareshkumar. Speaking at the occasion Health Minister DK Korungthang urged the hospital authorities to spread awareness of the facilities to be provided by the eye bank. There are a number of people who wish to donate their eyes but are not sure how and where to approach for the donation, the Minister said.
Cataract (clouding of the lens of the eye) is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide.
The number of people with cataract is said to be about 16 million in 2016. Although cataracts can be surgically removed, in rare cases eye transplant would be needed for which experienced doctors are needed, he said. On the alarming rise in the number of bandhs and blockades in the State, Korungthang said CSOs should opt for a more peaceful way to solve an issue rather than resorting to bandhs or general strikes. The relentless bandhs have a direct effect on the future of the younger generations.
JNIMS Hospital Director professor Deven Laishram appealed to the masses to step forward and pledge their eyes. He said he has also donated his own eyes to help the blind people.
