IMPHAL, May 12: Women Action for Development has arranged the first Independent People’s Tribunal on Crime against Women in Imphal at Classic Hotel here today.
During the inauguration of the two day event, more than 20 families of victims of crime against women shared their testimonies before the Double Bench Independent People’s Tribunal on crime against women that had occurred in the state.
WA Shishak, former Chief Justice of High Court of Chhattisgarh, and Dr KS Subramanian IPS (retd), former DGP of Tripura were part of the panel members. On the first day the panel heard various testimonies from families of sexual assault victims and those murdered by husbands and other similar cases.
In the sideline, M Sobita, Secretary of WAD said that during 2010 to 2016 various crimes against women have occurred and most of the cases are sexual assault and murder, many of them by their husbands. Till today, no exemplary actions have been taken up against the accused persons.
Today, WAD has constituted a two day Independent People’s Tribunal on crime against women. In our state the cases of crime against women has been increasing daily. But most of the cases have either been dumped or are pending for so many years after the occurrence of the incidents, she said.
Every victim family has lost hope and they feel that there is no way for justice. But WAD has collected all old cases and motivated families by convincing them properly with full hopes and encouragement to fight every case collectively with WAD, she said.
The recommendation by the panel after hearing the testimonies of the cases will be submitted to the Government of Manipur. The cases submitted today were from Ukhrul, Churachandpur, Moreh and four valley district cases but none from Tamenglong.
