IMPHAL, May 3: ISTV Editor Brozendra Ningomba today deposed before the Sessions Court, Imphal West as a prosecution witness of CBI in the July 23, 2009 BT road case.
Brozendra was the Editor of ‘Hueiyen Lanpao’ when the infamous incident occurred in 2009.
Thokchom Rabina, who was then eight months pregnant, died on BT road after she was hit by a stray bullet coming from an unknown direction while Chungkham Sanjit was killed in an alleged fake encounter inside Maimu Pharmacy on the same road on July 23, 2009.
Brozendra appeared before the Court as prosecution witness number 78. The Court would continue recording the statement of the Editor tomorrow as well.
It may be mentioned that CBI had submitted charge sheets against Head Constable Th Herojit and eight other cops including the then OC of City police station Y Munal regarding the case.
In January this year, Th Herojit had sensationally confessed that he killed Sanjit in a fake encounter.
However, four cops including Herojit failed to turn up for today’s hearing.
Of the 200 prosecution witnesses listed by CBI in its charge sheet, 77 witnesses including the then Imphal West Additional SP Dr AK Jhalajit, Sanjit’s mother Taratombi and Human Rights Alert director Babloo Loitongbam have deposed before the Court so far.
The case was handed over to CBI after ‘Tehelka’ magazine published tell-tale photos of the incident.
CBI later submitted charge sheets against the nine police personnel of Imphal West district.
The case was transferred from Sessions Court, Imphal West to Sessions Court, Imphal East on September 28, 2010 and the submission of prosecution witnesses started on January 5, 2012.
On November 23, 2014, the case was again transferred to Sessions Court, Imphal West.
