IMPHAL, May 25: The Kiyamgei Muslim Oinam Loukol Flood Relief Committee has lamented the lack of apathy on the part of government with regard to flood relief. About 800 hectares of paddy fields were flooded due to a breach in the Imphal River in Kiyamgei areas on May 21.
Speaking at a press meet held at the Manipur Press Club Convener of the newly formed committee Md Allauddin said, the State government authorities including the Keirao MLA have failed to even take stock of the situation.
Other than agricultural lands, the flood has also flooded about 1000 houses affecting at least 10,000 people, he claimed.
The worst affected areas are Kiyamgei Muslim, Kiyamgei Oinam Loukol, Urup Khunou, Urup Arapti and Lingchil Loukol. Keirao Makting and Urup Village have also been partly affected, he added.
He said on May 21, locals had informed the IFCD over phone around 2pm about a possible breach of the Imphal River bank due to the rising water level.
However, no one from the concerned office or other government departments turned up, he said. Around 8pm, the river bank breached.
The newly formed committee visited the IFCD office but unfortunately the minister concerned was found to be away, he said.
Nevertheless, the IFCD office sanctioned some relief materials including 40 numbers of bamboo, 60 numbers of bamboo chattei and 3000 empty cement bags, he added.
He asserted that the aid provided is not enough to even mend the breach.
The IFCD had agreed to sanction 5000 empty cement bags and 60 numbers of bamboos, he claimed.
He further appealed to the concerned department to at least visit the affected areas and take stock of the situation at the earliest. Md Allauddin somehow lauded State chief secretary for his support in supplying potable water to the affected areas.
