IMPHAL, May 5: A one-day legal awareness programme on the theme “Mob justice and its aspects” was held on Wednesday which was jointly organised by District Legal Services Authority, Imphal East and Youths’ Club Brahmapur, Imphal at its office premises of the latter located at Brahmapur Aribam Leikai, Imphal.
Delivering her speech, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Imphal East A Noutuneswori Devi, lamented that notwithstanding the fact that mob justice is an illegal act the trend has partially become a part of life in the state.
Observing the need to conduct a widespread awareness on the ill effects of mob justice, Noutuneswori attributed the growing trend as a result of the lengthy justice delivery system of the country.
Although people talk about losing its faith on the lengthy justice delivery system, yet no individual or group has dared to come forward demanding an amendment in the legal structure of the country.
According to her, mob justice mainly occurred in the state in incidents relating to crime against women, homicide, religious riots and communal clash, most of which falls under the provision of major Indian laws like Indian Panel Code, Criminal Procedure Code and Indian Evidence Act.
Advocate Th Rajkeshor, speaking on the ill effects of mob justice, opined that people often failed to realise the adverse effect of mob justice.
The intention of carrying out mob justice could be to reduce a crime however on the other hand vested interest individuals are taking advantage of it thus paving ways for more crimes, he said.
The Advocate also clarified that the reason behind the delay in dealing with a case are often due to lack of proper evidence and witness.
