IMPHAL, May 12: Pending hearing of the disqualification case of MLA of Moirang Assembly constituency Mairembam Prithviraj Singh, who is also the Parliamentary Secretary (Youth Affairs & Sports and Tourism), in the Supreme Court has been postponed till July.
Prithviraj was elected from the constituency on Congress ticket in the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election held in 2012.
Pukhrem Sharatchandra Singh who faced the MLA in the election filed Election Petition Case No 1 of 2012 in the High Court of Manipur, charging the latter with submission of false education qualifications in the election affidavit which was submitted to the concerned Returning Officer.
After the case was kept pending in the court for long, the petitioner approached the Supreme Court, pleading to dispose the case as soon as possible.
Acting on the plea, the apex court issued a directive to the High Court of Manipur on October 1, 2015.
Following the directive, the high court passed an order. However, the order was put on stay after MLA Prithviraj, respondent of the case pleaded the court to do so.
While the order was on stay, both the petitioner and respondent of the case made separate appeal in the Supreme Court.
Along with admitting the appeals, the apex court fixed dates for hearing of the case.
Hearing of the case was included in the cause list to be done in a Division Bench of the court on May 5.
As proceeding of the case could not be conducted on the day, the case hearing was included in the cause list on May 11.
Again the case hearing could not be conducted on the set day after which the court decided to hold it in the first week of July as there is summer vacation in the month of June.
The case will not be included in the vacation sittings of the court to be done during holidays as it is difficult to list the case in the sittings.
Amidst all the development, both the petitioner and respondent of the case have been waiting final verdict of the court.
