IMPHAL, May 24: “My parents are doctors, I too want to become a doctor in the future,” said Sohana Laishram who emerged as the topper in this year’s HSLCE when asked about her future ambitions.

A student of Nirmalabas School, Imphal, she scored 576 out of a total mark of 600, with a cent per cent score in Mathematics and Home Science, 98 in Manipuri, 94 each in Science and Social Science and 90 in English.

In an interview with IFP, Sohana who lives in Heirangoithong in Imphal West District said “I have an eye defect which made me conscious about the values of eyes, so I want to become an eye specialist”.

Daily revision of lessons and deep concentration helped in preparing for the examinations. Also, I consult my teachers if I have any doubts about my studies or need guidance, said Sohana who confessed that she was taken by surprise on hearing the news that she had come in the first position.

Talking about her study routine, Sohana stated that she studies at home for 2-3 hours during school days and over 10 hours on holidays. She also took tuition classes which she regards as extremely helpful, firstly as it helped her save time on revising the lessons and secondly confine students to an ambience suitable for them.

Expressing her objection to unwanted interferences to the academic calendar, she made an appeal against creating disturbances to the students on the ground of participation in social issues.

For her extraordinary feat, she thanked her parents, Laishram Birendro and RK Praneshwari Devi, teachers and colleagues, asserting that their constant encouragement and support helped her to score well.

I want to continue my study at Herbert Higher Secondary School along with my brother who already studies there, came her candid reply when asked about her immediate academic plans.

Her mother RK Praneshwari opened up her own secret of wanting Sohana to attempt the civil service exams in the future, adding in jest that her daughter’s chances of becoming an IAS officer will increase if Meiteis/Meeteis are given schedule tribe status.
