IMPHAL, May 17: The Schedule Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur has today suspended its proposed public rally on May 22 next in view of the ongoing ILPS demand related agitations and upcoming Imphal Municipal Corporation election.
Speaking to media persons at its office, convenor of the coordinating body of STDC, Mutum Churamani said that the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the list of scheduled tribe is for safeguarding our community under the Indian Constitution, asserting that there is no other alternative.
The proposed mass rally was suspended in view of the ongoing ILPS movement and upcoming IMC election. However, the STDCM will be organising a public meeting at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound on May 22, he announced. He appealed to leaders of social organisations, intellectuals, research scholars and others to participate in the public meeting.
