IMPHAL, May 31: Irate students today stormed the temporary election office opened at the Ananda Singh Higher Secondary Academy, Nongmeibung by Imphal East District authorities to oversee the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) elections.
The temporary office was opened at the School campus recently as the Imphal East DC office at Porompat remained inundated by flood water due to the recent rains.
Briefing mediapersons Thounaojam Malemnganba Secretary of Sapam Robinhood Remembarance Committee said, classes were set to resume at Ananda Higher Secondary School on May 23 after a long spell of summer vacation.
But as the school was occupied by the Porompat SDO as temporary office for IMC elections classes remained suspended till today.
Questioning the rationale of turning a school into a temporary election office he asked which is more important ‘classes’ or ‘elections’.
So they decided to storm the campus today in the afternoon and served an ultimatum to district authorities to shift the temporary office from the school premises within 4 pm.
However, Imphal East police swung into action and brought the situation under control while also facilitating talks with the district authorities on the demands of the students who gave an assurance to complete the shifting of the temporary office tomorrow by 4 pm.
Later, the Transport section of the SDO temporary office began shifting today.
Malemnganba further lamented on the lack of commitment on the part of the state government and political parties to exert due pressure to the Centre with regard to the three ILP bills.
