IMPHAL, May 31: As observed around the globe the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ 2016 under the theme ‘Get ready for plan packing’ the observance was also held across the state today.

The state level observance of the day was held at Jwaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) today jointly organised by the Directorate of Health Services and State Health Society.

Speaking at the function health minister, D Korunthang said tobacco consumption has become cause of concerned in the state and tackling the problem a major challenge for the Health department.

Citing the growing number of tobacco consumption or any kind of intoxicants, the Minister observed that it has become nearly impossible for the Government alone to counter the menace.

Any law or act to prevent people from consuming tobacco will not be effective unless those who are using tobacco voluntarily give up their unhealthy habits, he said.

According to the minister, those who are using tobacco and other intoxicants are aware of the hazardous effect of tobacco on their health yet they continue using it.

D Korungthang said that mere observance of ‘World No Tobacco Day’ alone cannot be effective in fight against tobacco. “We must put up a collective fight”, said Korungthang.

Director of Health Services, Dr Okram Ibomcha said despite the fact that tobacco is hazardous to health the government unfortunately have failed to take measures to stop selling and consuming tobacco.

He mentioned that in 17 to 18th century, America topped the list of countries with highest tobacco production and export. But, today China topped the list followed by India in the second rank when it comes to production of tobacco, he said.

He continued that it is high time to take up pragmatic measures to stop consumption of tobacco by seeking mass participation from the public in the fight against tobacco consumption.

Commissioner & secretary of Health & Family Welfare, PK Singh said that everyone must refrain from using health hazardous substances.
