IMPHAL, Jun 2: Voting for Imphal Municipal Corporation election stopped for some time following a heated stand-off between Sagolband AC MLA RK Imo and former of the same Constituency MLA Dr L Loken over a case of alleged proxy voting at Polling Station No 24/2 (TG Higher Secondary School) of Ward No 24 today.
According to information culled from the spot, even as voting was going on in full swing, some non-Congress workers suddenly raised a hue and cry alleging that Congress workers were indulging in proxy voting.
Within a few minutes, both RK Imo and Dr Loken arrived at the polling station.
After talking to their respective supporters, the two leaders had a heated argument followed by a brief physical confrontation.
Security personnel who were on duty at the polling station had a tough time to cool down the situation.
Meanwhile BJP Manipur Pradesh has lodged a complaint with the Returning Officer concerned over alleged insertion of Congress candidate’s name and the party symbol (palm) in identification slips given to voters.
One polling agent of BJP came across the identification slip at IMC Ward no 3 (Thangmeiband AC) in the course of the polling held today.
Speaking to media persons at his Thangmeiband Thingel Maru residence this afternoon, BJP candidate in the particular ward Hijam Nutanchandra decried that issuing identification slip to voters which have been inserted with the name and symbol of rival Congress candidate Gambhir Khumbongmayum violated election rules.
These slips were first detected at polling station no 3/2 (Thangmeiband Thingel Maru) in the morning and again in the afternoon at polling station no 3/5 (Lalambung Makhong).
BJP Manipur Pradesh general secretary (administration) M Ashnikumar was also present at the press meet.
