GUWAHATI, Jun 30: Republic of Korea’s ambassador to India, Cho Hyun said that his country and Northeast can mutually benefit by creating synergy in areas of common interest.
Addressing members of industry and representatives of Assam government at an interactive session, organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) here on Thursday, Hyun said that there is a need to narrow the gaps in people to people contact and trade. The ambassador said that there is a need for greater interaction between the youths of Republic of Korea, also called South Korea, and Northeast through student exchange programs.
Hyun observed that tourism sector can also play an important role in improving trade relations between his country and the region. Hyun said that improvement in connectivity would result in the flow of more tourists from his country to Northeast. He added that while flow of tourists would help local economy, it will also provide opportunity to Korean business to invest in the region.
The ambassador expressed confidence that mediums like art and cinema, education and medical tourism would assist in greater understanding of the two cultures and thus usher in a partnership for mutual benefit.
Additional chief secretary, V S Bhaskar underscored the need to engage with Korea in sectors like tourism, education and healthcare. State industries department commissioner Swapnanil Baruah said that Assam can benefit from technology collaboration with South Korea for the state’s silk industry. ICC president Shiv Siddanth Kaul observed that South Korea’s growth story over the last few decades has resulted in various Korean companies becoming household names in India. Kaul hoped that the ambassador’s maiden visit here would be the beginning of greater economic and social-cultural partnerships between Republic of Korea and Northeast.
