IMPHAL, Jul 4 : Demanding release of funds meant for students’ scholarship, a large number of students led by All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) stormed the MOBC office at North AOC today. Security guards posted at the MOBC office locked the office as the students marched forward. The students tried to break open the doors.
Security guards, after a peaceful talk with the students opened the front lock and allowed the students to go up the first floor of the MOBC office building where they staged a protest demonstration shouting slogans demanding timely release of funds meant for scholarship. As the situation went out of hand, the office doors were locked to keep the students from approaching into the office. Police arrived at the scene when the protesting students tried to force open the office. After a brief talk with the students, the police allowed a team of six students inside the MOBC office to meet the officials.
AMSU general secretary Manjit Sarangthem said scholarships meant for students are not released in time. The student body has submitted various memorandums to the MOBC Department demanding timely release of funds meant for scholarship but there has been no positive response till date. An enquiry committee was set up to investigate into alleged forfeiture of several benefits entitled to students by the Department but the reports collected by the committee have not been released till date, the student body secretary said. He further warned of intense agitation in case the scholarships are not released at the earliest.
