IMPHAL, Feb 25: The Extra Judicial Execution Victim Families Association Manipur (EEVFAM) organised a protest at Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai today demanding justice for the Khwairamband Keithel killing case.
Speaking to media persons, EEVFAM president Renu Takhellambam said that there are numerous cases of fake encounter in Manipur and an equally huge number of widows as a result of the ‘encounters’.
She pointed out that the July 23, 2009 ‘encounter’ case of Sanjit and Rabina is one of the most infamous incident among the numerous fake encounter cases that took place between 1979 and 2012, a list of which was sent to the Supreme Court by the association.
“Thounaojam Herojit has already testified that he shot Sanjit at the orders of the then Additional SP, Jhaljit. But even after all these revelations, the Government has not done anything”, Renu said adding that even though orders had been given to hand over the case to the CBI, it is still uncertain if there would be any level of fairness in the investigation.
Demanding transparency from the Government, Renu said, “The people of the State have no idea what decision the current Government and future Government will take. During the last 15 years of Chief Minister O Ibobi’s rule, around 1528 victims of AFSPA have been recorded”.
“But in July of 2015, when data were collected from Cheirap Court under the orders of the Supreme Court, the number of fake encounter cases came to around 300”, she added.
As a part of the protest, people shouted slogans and burnt the effigies of the CM, 2nd IRB CO Jhaljit and former DGP Joykumar.
