Blockchain is a distributed database that maintains information/order/records called blocks. The data is constantly growing, so a ‘completed block’ is linked with a new block with fresh information. Each new set of block contains a timestamp and references and identifies the previous block by a hashing function, forming an unbroken chain.
Blockchains are secure by design as they are inherently resistant to modification- once recorded, the data in a block cannot be altered retroactively. The technology can be used to record transactions between two parties effectively and in a verifiable and permanent way. Moreover, Blockchain itself can be programmed to automatically trigger transactions.
